Holding barbeque parties with acquaintances and colleagues is one way to bring the connection to more profound level. Eating, chatting, and enjoying together nowadays is a must for me.

However, I’m stuck at the first step to hold the parties – find the right grill to last in a long time.

The grill options are endless with many types, features, and price ranges. I have narrowed down my choices to natural gas grill because of the reasons below.

Natural Gas Grill vs. Propane Gas Grill

The three primary sources of energy for grills are charcoal, natural gas, and liquid propane. Natural gas and liquid propane are much easier to clean and environmentally friendly. However, they can’t create the smoky flavor like the charcoal grills.

Natural Gas Grill

Pros: lighter, safer for storing in case of leaking gas, beneficial for greenhouse cycle

Cons: more complicated for connecting the pipeline, requires more time and effort

Propane Gas Grill

Pros: portable, easy to set up

Cons: needs replacing the gas tank often

Another solution for gas grill users who want to change to natural gas grill is buying the conversion kit. However, this conversion kit is only applicable to some models.

Which Is the Best Natural Gas Grill for You?

The freestanding gas grill accounts for most of the list because of its affordable price and various sizes. The built-in natural gas grills are more expensive due to durable material.

The list starts with the freestanding models which are classified into small, midsized and large groups. The built-in models are at the bottom of the list.

1. Weber Q3200 Natural Gas Grill

(Best Budget)

Weber Q3200 Natural Gas Grill

Weber Q3200 is a small gas grill with only two burners. The side tables are exclusive because they fold in when not in use. The thick gauge stainless steel burner tube has a rectangular shape. After pushing the electronic igniter, turn the two knobs for direct or indirect grilling.

However, with the lack of heat tents, the drippings will drop directly into the burner hole and might cause flare-ups. To avoid this issue, place the food away from the burner so the oils will not touch the burner.

The output per hour is 21,700 BTUs over 393 square inches of main cooking area. The BTUs per square inch is rather low, which is not hot enough for searing steak. The heat distribution is surprisingly fast and even.

The distinctive feature is the LED light with three lights to illuminate the inside while opening the lid. Other features are built-in thermometer, natural gas hook-up hose, and removable catch pan. The downsides are open cart design with only two wheels.

Buying Guides

This is the first part you need to read before diving into the natural gas grill list. List out the desirable features you need in your grill.

1. What Features to Look for in a Natural Gas Grill?

Heating System

  • Burner has three main shapes: tube, double or U-shape, and even heat burner. The tube burner is the straight tube with top ported or side ported burner. Double burners have two standard tubes with the U shape to produce more flame. Even heat burner is the rarest type with the pancake-liked shape, which combines the tube and double burners to cover more space.
  • Heat distribution plates or tents help distribute the heat widely and evenly. Furthermore, it prevents oil from clogging the burner holes. As soon as the drippings touch the plates, they will evaporate and create the smoky flavor for your food.
  • Cooking grates have two main shapes: straight or wave-like shape. Stainless steel or cast iron are the main materials for these grids. The porcelain coating will make the rods durable and easy to clean.

While stainless steel material is rust resistant and lightweight, cast iron distributes and retains heat better. Moreover, some grates have dual surface for different purposes of grilling.

Ignition Method

  • Mechanical igniter or Piezo igniter: creates a single spark with each push.
  • Electronic igniter requires the battery to deliver a steady sequence of spark to the burner.
  • Control dial activated: which incorporates the electronic igniter into the control knob.

Storage and Shelves

If you prefer the enclosed cabinet, check if the moving wheels can withstand the weight for portability. The advantage of enclosed cabinet is to prevent unwanted animals from visiting the dripping trays. However, these models come with extra price.

In case of a small patio, the collapsible side shelves are great fit. However, flimsy shelves can break during folding up and down. If the burner is incorporated into the table, you can’t fold it down. The side tables also have built-in caddies or hooks for hanging your cooking tools.

Side Burner

The side burner can be the infrared sear burner for searing meat. Otherwise, it is normal gas stove for simmering soup, or sauce if you have large outdoor area and don’t want to run back and forth into your kitchen.

2. How to Clean and Maintain the Natural Gas Grill?

To prevent rusty spots especially in the grilling system, you can clean the grill before or after grilling. Maintenance either before or after grilling needs flaming in high heat for 15 to 30 minutes.

After detaching the valve, start cleaning the cook box first. After that, follow the steps below.

Clean the Grates

Stainless steel grates need wire grill brush. Porcelain enameled grids need more delicate brush – nylon brush. After that, wipe them with oiled paper towel to remove bristles.

Clean Flame Tents

Soak the sponge in soapy water, clean the tents with that sponge and take care of small corners or holes.

Clean the Burner

Brush the burners with stainless steel grill brush. Replace the oxidized burners with new ones if the burners are in warranty.

Clean the Cook Box

Remove the funnel tray and clean it with soapy water. Use the sponge to clean the fire box as well.

FAQs

The top popular questions about gas grill will cover your concerns.

How many BTUs are enough for an effective grilling system?

The larger the main cooking area, the higher the BTU-per-hour input. Therefore, I have calculated the BTUs per square inch by dividing the total BTUs by the size of the main cooking area. The average BTU for each square inch is around 70 to 80 BTUs.

Some high-end models have high BTU (around 90 to 100 BTUS) but share the same effective grilling system as low-price models. This is mainly because the heat distribution relies on the cooking system and the lid.

What is the natural gas grill better than Weber?

There are two high-end brands with the same grilling space as the Weber Summit series, which are Napoleon Grill and Broil King Regal.

Both Weber Summit and Broil King Regal models share the higher price. While Napoleon Grills Prestige 500 Natural Gas Grill has the wide cooking area as Weber Summit 7270001 S-470, the initial model comes with a lower price.

The detailed differences also lie in the additional features of each model. You can scroll above to compare again. In short, Napoleon Grills feature similar functions with a more affordable price range.

How long does Weber gas grill last?

Weber gas grills have effective and durable grilling systems, which explains the higher price tag. The burners will work great in five or ten-year period. If you have any concerns, the 10-year warranty in some newest models will replace the rusty parts for you.

My Top Pick

My favorite natural gas grill is Napoleon Grills Prestige 500 Natural Gas Grill. This model fits into my limited budget with large cooking area, distinctive wave grids, LED controls, as well as the infrared sear burner for a perfect steak.
