What Are the Best Flour Sifters?

A flour sifter is a strainer with a closely-knitted mesh screen which is housed in a container. This container is usually made of iron and is shaped like a cylinder with a diameter of approximately 6 inches.

So what happens when we sift flour, and is there any benefit to it?

When you sift flour, any lump in it will be broken apart, and simultaneously, air will circulate through the flour. This process makes flour much lighter and easier to be mixed evenly with other ingredients such as cocoa powder or sugar.

When baking, if you sift your flour thoroughly, you’ll be more likely to get a light, fluffy and soft cake. This is especially true for cakes with delicate textures like angel food, sponge, or genoise. Failure to do so can result in a lumpy, overly dry, and hard cake.

While many believe that commercial flour nowadays doesn’t need to be sifted, it’s always better to be sure that your flour is lump-free and aerated, especially if it has been sitting around for a long time.

How to Pick the Best Flour Sifter?

If you’re reading this, then I assume that you are looking for a sifter but you are not very familiar with how to choose a sifter. Therefore, here are some of my suggestions that should help you pick the best flour sifter for yourself.

Material

Sifters are made from many different materials, varying from tin to heavy-weight plastic and stainless steel.

What’s the best material for a flour sifter? I myself would recommend choosing heavy-weight plastic and stainless steel as they are more durable and rust-resistant.

Sifting Mechanism

Different sifters may have different sifting mechanism – some use rotating hand crank, some use squeeze handle, some are battery-operated, or some don’t have a handle at all. With so many choices, how can you know what would be the best one for you?

If you have wrist or mobility problems, or if you’re suffering from arthritis, I’d suggest you buy sifters with a rotary hand crank. They are generally easier to use and are not as physically taxing as your average squeeze handle.

Capacity

Another thing to take into account is capacity. Sifters’ capacities generally range from 3-cup to as much as 8-cup. Determine how frequent and how much do you usually need to sift to know how large you need your sifter to be.

Versatility

You wouldn’t want to use different sifters for different ingredients. Read the product’s description carefully before purchase to make sure that it can sieve more than just flour.

Another minor convenience that you might want your sifter to have is volume markings on the side of the sifter. It can save you the trouble of using another bakeware to measure the flour. However, some sifters’ measurements are not very accurate. Therefore, you should read other users’ reviews to know for sure the volume markings are accurate.

Easy to Clean

The majority of sifters currently available for sale are easy to clean, so cleaning won’t pose much of a trouble. However, if you’re aiming for a quick and effort cleaning, you should find sifters that are dishwasher safe.

Warranty and Return Plan

Sometimes, the sifter you buy might not be to your liking. Sometimes, you receive defective products. It’s best to check the product’s warranty and return plan if possible.

Some people also claim that a product’s warranty usually indicates its average lifespan. While I am in no position to confirm or contradict that, you can take this into consideration.

FAQs

Should you wash your flour sifter? How to clean a flour sifter?

Many bakes stated that they don’t usually wash their flour sifters. However, I believe it’s still best to have your bakeware cleaned and taken care of. If you don’t know how to wash a flour sifter, here’s how.

Tap the sifter repeatedly to get rid of any excess flour. For dishwasher safe sifters, you can simply put them in your dishwashers and call it a day. What about sifters that can’t be cleaned in a dishwasher?

Let your flour sifter sit in a solution of dish soap and water for roughly an hour. Gently scrub through the sifter before rinsing it with clean water. Dry it with a soft fabric thoroughly (a wet sifter can soon become a rusty sifter). And boom, you’re done.

How to use a flour sifter?

Find a bowl large enough to house your sifter, place the sifter in the bowl. Pour flour into the top of your flour sifter.

Make sure that your sifter is inside the bowl. When you sift, flour particles will be falling through, and it can create a big mess. Moreover, if you measure before you sift, the amount of flour you end up having might not be as accurate anymore.

Once you’re all set, start cranking the flour sifter (or, in some cases, shake it) carefully until you have the amount of flour you need. After all the flour is sieved through, tap the side of the sifter to get rid of all the remaining flour inside the sifter.

The final product of your hard work should be a clump-free, fluffy, and well-aerated flour. After that, your flour is good to go.

What can I use instead of a flour sifter?

Are you in a pinch? Do you need to use a sifter but can’t find one? Fear not, for I am here.

One substitute you can use for a sifter is a strainer. It can aerate dry ingredients just as well as a sifter. However, you will have to break up the lumps yourself; the strainer will not do that for you. What a bummer.

Another choice is a wire whisk, get a bow large enough for your flour and use the whisk to sift the flour in a circular motion. If you’re using cake flour, or you’re making cakes with a spongy base, then sift it as meticulously as you can.

If you don’t have a whisk, then a fork can work too. Use it to sift dry ingredients like how you would use a whisk.

If you don’t have a fork, well then, tough luck, my friend.

Is a strainer the same as a sifter?

In culinary, a strainer and a sifter are two entirely different kitchenware. In professional terms, a strainer is used to separate solids and liquids apart. A sifter, on the other hand, is a device to break up clumps, combine, and aerates dry ingredients.

Nevertheless, many people have turned to strainers when they don’t have a sifter available at hand. While strainers can indeed aerate dry ingredients and can act as a temporary substitute for sifters, they cannot break up lumps as sifters do.

Do I really need to sift flour?

Many people dislike the hassle that follows with sifting flour – it’s troublesome, it’s messy and there’s no guarantee that the cake will turn out better than one with unsifted ingredients.

All of this begs the question – is sifting flour really necessary?

To answer this question, first, we need to know the origin of flour-sifting. Back in the good ol’ days, flour used to be mixed with little “pleasant” surprises like bugs, chaffs, bits of bran. Flour back in the past was also not as finely ground and dust-like as ours nowadays. Sifting ground will weed out the unwanted chunks and impurities, leaving us with more uniform flour.

Nowadays, however, flour is highly refined, and it generally doesn’t contain any foreign particle. Many flour bags even have “pre-sifted” branded onto the package, which means that your flour is ready to go straight into the baking process.

So, does this mean that sifting is totally unnecessary, and it’s just a lie from corporations to sell products? Well, no.

Flour is a particulate, which means that it can settle and compact somewhere during the process of packaging and shipping. Sifting will aerate your flour, separate all the particles apart and break all the possible lumps that are in it.

But there are many types of flour, some may argue, and not all of them need sifting. If you are thinking between those lines, then hats off to you, because you are absolutely right.

To my observation, all-purpose and bread flour, in general, don’t need sifting while cake flour, on the other hand, does.

So, you just need to ascertain the flour type to know whether you should sift or not? Well, not so fast.

Another instance where you are recommended to sift flour is when you are using flour as a thickener in your pastry cream. Should you skip this process, your cream can turn out all lumpy and funny.

Cakes with delicate textures like angel food, sponge or genoise also need to use sifted flour. Unless you like dry, lumpy, and hard cakes, you should sift your flour thoroughly.

Can you put a flour sifter in the dishwasher?

Baking, or even cooking for that matter, can be a messy job; it can leave behind many dishes and kitchenware to be washed. With the advent of the dishwasher, many people prefer to shove their dirty dishes into the dishwasher and be done with it.

However, many kitchen appliances are not compatible with the dishwasher. Flour sifter, in this case, can vary as well. Many flour sifters are dishwasher safe, and many aren’t. Therefore, if you want to be 100% sure, it’s best that you check out the user’s guide before putting the flour sifter in a dishwasher.

My Top Pick

My favorite sifter of all time is, without question, Bellemain 3-cup stainless steel flour sifter. I’ve had one it my kitchen for years, and it does wonders, all my cakes come out soft and fluffy. I hope that this will be of as much use to you as it has been to me.
