If you’re planning to buy a masticating juicer, you’ll need to know some tips and tricks on how to choose the right one for you. Here are some aspects you need to take into consideration when buying a masticating juicer.

Masticating Juicer Design

If you’ve spent enough time browsing for a masticating juicer, you’ll notice that they usually come in two different styles, either horizontal or vertical. So out of these two, which one is a better option?

Well, to be honest, I’d say that a horizontal masticating juicer usually is more efficient than their vertical counterpart as the ingredients are fed right into the drill. However, a horizontal model will often take up noticeably more space. Therefore, if you need to save some space on the kitchen counter, then you should consider getting a vertical masticating juicer.

RPMs (Revolutions per Minute)

On virtually every advertisement for a masticating juicer, there’s a little line that informs you of the product’s RPM. So, does RPM matter, and what does it signify?

Usually, a higher RPM means that the model can process food faster than one with a lower RPM. However, a higher RPM also equals a higher noise when being in use and more heat will be generated when grinding food. The average RPM rate you’ll see in most masticating juicers is 80.

Chute Size

If you don’t want to spend too much time prepping food, then maybe you’ll prefer masticating juicers with a large chute as you can shove large pieces into the feeding tube. However, a larger chute also means that it can pose more danger if you happen to stick your hand in.

If you don’t mind spending time cutting ingredients into manageable sizes, then a smaller chute can fit you just fine.

Single Auger or Double Auger?

Masticating juicers either come with one single auger or a double auger. For the first time masticating juicers users, the difference between the two might not be all that clear. To help you out, I’ll briefly explain the two types of auger’s characteristics and what they are best for.

A single auger, as the name suggests, has a single gear mechanism to juice fruits and vegetables. Even though they’re quite efficient, they’re best used for small fruits and softer veggies.

Furthermore, because they employ only a single gear mechanism, they’re best suited for occasional uses. If you’re looking for something that can handle heavy-duty use, then most single-auger masticating juicers will probably not suit your needs.

However, a single drill is a perfect choice for those tight on budget as single-auger masticating juicers tend to be cheaper than double-auger ones.

A double auger, on the other hand, can handle harder food and is generally more efficient than a single auger. Masticating juicers of this type use double gears to extract juice from ingredients and are suitable for various kinds of food such as leafy greens, celery, wheatgrass, carrots, etc.

If you’re looking for something with a bit of versatility, then a double auger makes a better option. Or if you need a masticating juicer for commercial purposes, then I’d recommend getting a double-auger one. However, do remember that a double auger is usually much more expensive than a single auger.

Material Type

Generally speaking, the primary materials used for masticating juicers fall into three categories: plastic, steel, and carbon-infused parts. Out of the three, which one is the best choice?

Again, if you’re an occasional user, then a plastic one will be more than enough to serve your needs. Plastic is generally less expensive than steel and carbon-infused components. Therefore, if you don’t use a masticating juicer that often, there’s no need to spend more money when you can get a cheaper option that can do it job just as well.

However, if you’re buying one for commercial or heavy-duty use, then I’d recommend getting a steel or carbon-infused masticating juicer. You’ll find the quality they offer worth the extra money.

FAQs

Is A Masticating Juicer Better?

If you’ve spent a lot of time browsing for a masticating juicer, chances are that you have probably come across words like “centrifugal” and “blender” quite a few times. So, out of the three of them, which one is the best? Is a masticating juicer better than the two other products?

To answer this question, we need to take some aspects into account.

First, when it comes to speed in general, a masticating juicer is a lot slower than a blender or a centrifugal. If you need something to juice fruits and vegetables quickly, then you may not like masticating juicers as they generally require more prep time, and they also process fruits much slower.

However, because it takes time to process food, a masticating juicer produces considerably less food waste than a centrifugal, which is infamous for the appalling amount of food waste it makes for a single glass of juice. So, in this regard, between a masticating juicer and a centrifugal, the former is clearly the winner.

A blender, meanwhile, produces little to no food waste because it mixes the pulp with the juice itself. Therefore, juice processed by a blender tends to contain a higher amount of fiber, both soluble and insoluble, than those made by a centrifugal or a masticating juicer.

However, there are those that dislike pulps in their drinks, so they might not like blended juice. In cases like this, the most viable option would be a masticating juicer.

So, to cut a long story short, whether a masticating juicer is a better option all depends on your personal preferences, needs, and habit.

Is A Masticating Juicer The Same As Cold Press?

Yes, a masticating juicer and a cold press are two different words to refer to the same thing. Because masticating juicer doesn’t produce much heat while pressing fruit and vegetable and can produce high juice yield, a masticating juicer is sometimes referred to as a cold press.

Do Masticating Juicers Remove Fiber?

If you want the short answer, then yes, unfortunately, masticating juicers do more or less remove fiber.

However, if you still have time to stick around, then I’d tell you that the answer to this question is a bit more complicated than that.

First, we need to understand that there are two main types of fiber: soluble and insoluble.

As the name suggests, soluble fiber can dissolve in the water and can be found in several types of food, such as legumes, oats, and chia seeds.

Soluble fiber, when coming into contact with water, can form a gel-like substance that has several benefits for the digestive system, such as “trapping” harmful components to the body like cholesterols. Additionally, it has been proved that soluble fiber can slow down the breaking down the process of sugars and carbs in the body.

Insoluble fiber, on the other hand, cannot dissolve in water. However, this type of fiber is exceptionally efficient in absorbing whatever water it comes into contact with. Insoluble fiber can be found in the peels, seeds as well as stalks of fruit and vegetables.

Because insoluble fiber can absorb water, it can make waste pass through the digestive system easier. This is why you need an adequate intake of fiber every day so that you don’t become constipated. Furthermore, it can make you feel fuller. If you’re trying to go on a diet, it’s essential that you incorporate insoluble fiber into your meals as it can help you with weight loss.

Juice processed through a masticating juicer, while has some amount of soluble fiber, does not retain insoluble one. You might think that the small amount of soluble fiber present in the juice is enough, but unfortunately, that is not the case – you need both soluble and insoluble fiber.

If you want to enjoy juice with a decent amount of insoluble fiber, you need to add some of the pulp left behind after juicing – that’s where most of that beneficial insoluble fiber is.

How To Clean A Masticating Juicer?

I believe one of the main reasons why people are put off buying a masticating juicer is, aside from its price, how arduous cleaning it can be. If you’re not too sure how to clean a masticating juicer in an efficient way, gather your soft brush, mild dish soap, soft fabric and spatula and follow my instructions.

First, to ensure no accidents will happen during your cleaning process, you need to unplug your masticating juicer first. Then, process to disassemble it.

Use a spatula to scrape all the pulp from the container and rinse it through with warm water. Then you need to use a small brush to clean the disassembled parts. If you want to do a better job at cleaning the small nooks and crannies, you need to use brushes as small as a nail brush.

For more thorough cleaning, I’d recommend soaking the components in warm soapy water for a few minutes before rinsing through them with fresh water again. Remember to pay special attention to the fine mesh, as that’s where most of the pulp will be stuck in. If you happen to let the juice particles dry in the mesh, you’ll encounter a lot of troubles trying to remove them later on, so be sure to clean them as soon as possible.

Once you’ve rinsed the parts with freshwater, use a soft fabric to wipe them through and let them air dry in a drying rack.

Masticating Juicer Vs. Blender?

Some people might think that a masticating juicer and a blender are the same. However, this is not the case, while they do share some similarities, masticating juicers and blenders are still two vastly different products.

To put it simply, masticating juicers remove fiber and pulp from your juice. When making juice with a masticating juicer, you can pack more fruits and veggies into it. This means more vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients. However, because most fruits contain a certain level of natural sugars, more fruits also mean a higher content of sugar in your drink. So you need to watch out for that.

A blender, on the other hand, does not remove fiber and pulp from your juice. Juice processed with a blender, therefore, will be packed with pulp as well as fiber. Furthermore, it can keep you full for a longer period of time and, as such, more suitable for those seeking to go on a diet. What’s more, because it does not require a large amount of food, blended juice does not spike your blood sugar.

Masticating Juicer Vs. Centrifugal?

The similarities between a masticating juicer and a centrifugal end at both being a form of juicing fruits and vegetables. When it comes to other aspects such as methods of operation, speed, required prep time, amount of food waste, noise, and cost, there’s a notable discrepancy between the two lines of products.

Operation method

Most of the differences between a masticating juicer and a centrifugal come from how they work. While a masticating juicer operates by using gears, as opposed to blades, to grind fruits and veggies, a centrifugal extracts juice from food by using a blade to dice it into small pieces. In many ways, a centrifugal is a lot similar to a blender.

Speed

You can count on a centrifugal to be much faster than an average masticating juicer. Because a centrifugal uses a blade to slice and dice food, it works at a surprisingly fast pace. On the other hand, because a masticating juicer uses a gear to grind food, its speed is a lot slower.

Does this mean that a masticating juicer is inferior to a centrifugal, judging on speed alone? Well, maybe you should know that thanks to its slow speed, a masticating juicer can yield much more juice than a centrifugal, especially when it comes to harder food such as apples, celery, beets or carrots.

Required prepped time

Once again, centrifugal seems to be a better option if we take the required prep time into account. Because most centrifugals have a large feeding tube, a lot of the time, you can simply shove the whole apple into it.

A masticating juicer, meanwhile, requires much more prep time. Most masticating juicers will clog up if you place large pieces into them. In the worst case scenario, masticating juicers of low quality can break down if they can’t handle the jamming.

With all of that being said, I do believe that generally preparing fruits and veggies for juicing takes little time and, as such, I don’t see the point in being overly picky about speed.

Amount of food waste

In terms of food waste, a masticating juicer is clearly the winner. Because it utilizes the squeezing motion with its gears and takes time to break down the food, a masticating juicer can yield considerably more juice with noticeably less waste than a centrifugal can.

Even though a centrifugal can still generate a decent amount of juice, a lot of the time, it requires a large quantity of fruits and veggies to do so. If you hate to see food go to waste, you will be appalled to see the amount of food waste a single glass of juice made with centrifugal can produce.

Noise

Even though I find the majority of consumers don’t mind too much when it comes to loud noises, there are those that need products that generate sounds as quiet as possible. For these people, loud noise can undoubtedly be a deal-breaker. As it happens, a centrifugal and a masticating juicer creates different levels of noise.

Because of its high speed, a centrifugal generally is a lot louder than a masticating juicer. On the other hand, because a masticating juicer utilizes grinding motion rather than slicing, it’s noticeably quieter.

Cost

Generally speaking, a masticating juicer is a lot more expensive than a centrifugal. You’ll notice that most masticating juicers are two or three times as expensive as a centrifugal.

To determine which product you should get between the two, it all boils down to how much you can afford and, more importantly, what your need is.

If you want to process harder food such as apples, celeries, beets, carrots, etc. then you should get a masticating juicer. Food as hard as these can easily render your centrifugal useless. Don’t try to save money by getting centrifugal only to have it break down on the first few uses after juicing apples.

Furthermore, I do believe that a masticating juicer makes a more economical choice in the long term. Because a centrifugal produces a considerable amount of food waste and, as such, needs a larger quantity of fruits and veggies to make a single glass of juice, in the long run, the money for the ingredients will eventually add up. Therefore, why not spend a bit more money getting a masticating juicer for more options and added versatility.

My Top Pick

You might have guessed that if I were to recommend a single masticating juicer to anyone, then my current top pick would undoubtedly be the Omega NC900HDC Extractor And Nutrition Center Juicer 150-Watt Masticating Juicer. With its innovative design, high versatility, it will not do you wrong.
