What’s the Difference Between a Teapot and a Tea Kettle?

For many who are new to the fabulous world of tea, the differences between a teapot and a tea kettle are not all that obvious. And it’s easy to understand their confusion, they do look similar in one way or another.

A tea kettle is what you use to boil water. Even though it has the word “tea” in it, most of the time, it’s not very smart to put tea leaves in them as kettles are designed exclusively to heat your water.

On the other hand, a teapot usually can’t be used directly on a heat source. You’re supposed to heat water in a kettle first, let the boiling water sit for a few minutes before pouring it in your teapot along with your tea leaves.

Pros

  • Fast to boil
  • Easy to use

  • Easy to clean

Cons

  • Product has plastic inside

Personal Experience:

This product seems to have conflicting reviews – people either love it or hate it. For me personally, this tea kettle does its job. It can boil water in a short amount of time, it has a large capacity, it doesn’t rust, and it’s easy to clean.

However, there are certain things that I would’ve changed about the product. I wish it didn’t have any plastic on the inside. Another thing that I want to point out is that this kettle turns brown awfully quick.

OXO Brew Classic Tea Kettle

(Runner Up)

OXO Brew Classic Tea Kettle

Advertised to be made from high-grade stainless steel, OXO Brew Classic Tea Kettle seems like an ideal choice for those who hate to see rust on their kettles. Additionally, its rotating handle makes it a lot easier to clean the inside of the product.

To make sure that you’re safe from the hot surface, its manufacturer has equipped the kettle with a heat resistant handle, a silicone knob, and a silicone tab on the spout cover.

You might be wondering what its spout cap does. Well, first of all, this lid acts as a built-in whistle – it will notify you whenever your water comes to a boiling point. Moreover, with this tightly sealed cap, you can rest assured no boiling water will drip onto you.

Key Features:

  • Built-in whistle
  • Made from stainless steel

  • Spout comes with a lid
  • Not induction compatible
  • Large lid

  • Easy to clean
  • Short boiling time
  • Tight lid
  • Has a built-in whistle

Cons

  • Not compatible with induction cooktop
  • Maximum fill line of kettle is rather low

Personal Experience:

One thing I particularly like about this kettle is that it has a sleek, albeit simple, design. It doesn’t rust like many of my previous kettles, and its tightly sealed lid means that my clumsy self has been saved many times from accidentally splashed myself with freshly boiled water.

I live alone, so the low maximum fill line doesn’t bother me much. However, there have been times when I feel slightly annoyed by this inconvenience.

What is this kettle’s maximum fill line then, you ask. According to its manufacturers, you can only fill this kettle to no more than the middle of the spout opening.

What if you don’t particularly care, and no one gets to dictate how much water you fill in the kettle? Well, from my personal experience, the kettle will spills water everywhere if you fill it with more water than you should. So be careful.

I was trying to find a kettle that would be compatible with my induction stovetop when I stumbled across this gem. When used on my induction stovetop, this kettle boils in a surprisingly short amount of time. This is my go-to option when I need a quick cup of tea.

Another thing that I like about this kettle is that it is rather small and lightweight. I have quite a small kitchen, and therefore, I really appreciate kitchenware that doesn’t take up too much space. It goes without saying that this kettle fits perfectly in my cozy little kitchen.

I personally haven’t encountered the chipping problem like some other customers. However, it doesn’t mean that I don’t have any issue with this kettle. One complaint that I have for this kettle is that it tends to dribble all over the place when poured slowly.

Buying Guide – How to Pick the Best Tea Kettles?

There are many things to take into consideration when buying a tea kettle. With so many options available on the market, it seems like it’s impossible to choose one. However, here are some factors that you should keep an eye on when buying a kettle.

Cost

Tea kettles have a wide price range, going from as long as 15$ to roughly 100$. Therefore, it’s crucial to know how much your budget can afford. This way, you can narrow down the list a lot.

Typically, a kettle in the range of 15$-30$ is more than enough for those who are looking for a kettle that has a short boiling time without durability in mind.

However, if you want your kettle to last longer, then it’s best to find a more expensive one.

Material

Many people tend to overlook kettle material when buying one. However, this is a grave mistake. Kettle material can affect its longevity. Furthermore, metals such as aluminum, copper can leach harmful chemicals into your drink and, therefore, affect your health.

It’s best to find one made of glass or stainless steel. They are of higher quality to materials such as aluminum, copper, or plastic. If you prefer durability, then you should opt for stainless steel. On the other hand, if you prefer kettles that won’t leach anything into your tea, then maybe glass would be our best bet.

Built-in Whistle’s Noise

Nowadays, most kettles on sale have built-in whistle to alert the users that their water has come to a boiling point.

However, there are kettles with whistles that are so quiet that it’s impossible to hear them in the very next room. Conversely, many whistles so loud that they are borderline nerve-wracking.

Therefore, if you have a hearing problem, then it’s best to find a kettle with a loud alarm. On the other hand, if you’re oversensitive to sounds, you should consider finding one with a quieter whistle.

Exterior Heat

Many kettles’ exteriors get so hot after boiling that it’s impossible to touch them without an oven mitt. Kettles with scorching surfaces can potentially burn the users if they aren’t careful enough.

So if you don’t want to burn yourself, then you should do extensive research to make sure that your kettle will not get too hot on the outside after boiling.

Weight

For most people, kettle’s weight is not really an issue. Nevertheless, many have wrist problems or can’t handle heavy things. There are also people who travel a lot and want to have a lightweight kettle that won’t weigh them down during their trip.

So, even though this may not seem like a big issue, you should look up kettles’ weight before buying them so that they won’t be too heavy for you.

Size

Usually, a kettle’s size will determine its weight and capacity. Consider your need, do you need to boil a cup or two every day on average, or do you have to make several beverages?

Another thing to take into account is how much space the kettle will take up your kitchen? Think about where you will put the kettle after use and whether it will cram up your kitchen. Buying a kettle that is too big, and not being able to find a place to put it away will not be a fun business.

Durability

Durability is what determines whether you’re gonna have to keep looking for a new kettle or you’re gonna save your money for something else. You would want to find a kettle that won’t rust, won’t be scratched easily, and won’t be dented / cracked after even the slightest impact.

Currently, the most durable materials are 18/10 stainless steel and borosilicate glass.

FAQs

What’s the safest tea kettle material?

Understandably, no one wants to unknowingly consume toxic from their food or drink. For tea lovers, one of their biggest concerns is the question of what might be the safest kettle material. And this is a good question.

A tea kettle is considered to be safe for use when it is made of non-toxic materials. What is the key feature of non-toxic materials? The key feature of non-toxic materials is that they won’t leach into your drink or can be scratched off easily.

There are many kettles on the market that has an inner coatings that are prone to be scratched off after a while. You would want to avoid these types of kettles.

What are some kettle materials that you should steer clear off?

The first one would be aluminum. It is classified as a neuron-toxin. Explicitly speaking, it can do harm to your neuron system. To name an example, researches have shown that people with higher dietary aluminum exposure have a higher chance of suffering from Alzheimer’s.

You might be freaking out, thinking about the aluminum covered pots and pans you or your friends have. Rest assured, as long as they aren’t scratched off; you’re safe.

So what about glass kettles? They don’t rust, and they don’t leach into your drink, they can’t be scratched off. And you’re right; they make good material for tea kettles.

However, they aren’t very good at withstanding extreme heat. If you aren’t careful, you may run the risk of cracking the kettles. A cracked kettle can drip scorching water onto you, which is undoubtedly a safety concern. Therefore, glass is not the safest material for tea kettles.

So what would be the safest material then? Up until now, our best bet is stainless steel.

What’s stainless steel? This metal is made of iron with a layer of oxide produced from Chromium. This layer is known as the “passive layer,” its main job is to prevent further corrosion of the metal. The more Chromium stainless steel has, the more corrosion resistant it becomes.

What makes stainless steel safe? First of all, it doesn’t contain harmful metals like aluminum or copper. Theoretically, it doesn’t rust, and therefore, it won’t get into your drink. Lastly, if it isn’t coated with any other material, stainless steel’s surface can’t be scratched off and, therefore, won’t leave chips in your water.

Is there a tea kettle that doesn’t rust?

Rusty kettle can be a pain in the neck, it looks unappetizing, and it can pose a health risk to its owners. So one of the top priorities for those searching for kettles is undoubtedly rust-resistant quality.

However, it seems like an impossible task finding one that will never rust. If you dig long and deep enough into the review section, you will definitely find one or two complaints about the product rusting.

So, is there a tea kettle that doesn’t rust? Well, as mentioned before, stainless steel theoretically doesn’t rust. Therefore, stainless steel is worth consideration. If you want to buy top-notch quality ones, then high grade 18/10 stainless steel is my recommendation.

However, there are many factors that can affect a kettle’s longevity. If your household uses hard water, then there’s a higher chance of your kettles getting rust stains. In fact, hard water can reduce an appliance’s lifespan by up to 50 percent.

What can you do if you’re living in an area with hard water then? Well, you can address the problem with baking soda, lemon juice, vinegar, or a water softener.

If you can’t find a water softener anywhere, then here’s an instruction to clean all the rust from your beloved tea kettles.

  • Fill the kettle with water and white vinegar with a ratio of 1:1
  • Place the kettle on the stove and boil the liquid
  • Once the liquid comes to a boiling point, wait a few minutes before turning off the heat.
  • Wait for the water to cool down (it should feel lukewarm) and then dump the water.
  • Use a scrubbing pad (remember to avoid abrasive ones) to clean the insides of the kettle. Scrub thoroughly before rinsing with fresh water.
  • Wash the kettle again as you normally would.
  • Dry it with a soft fabric

If you feel stainless steel is not a good enough option, then glass kettles are worth your consideration. Even though they can be more fragile than their stainless steel counterparts, you can rest assured that they will not go rusty on you.

Is stainless tea kettle toxic?

So far, stainless steel is one of the safest materials for tea kettles. Compared to other materials such as aluminum, copper, ceramic glazes… stainless steel is considerably safer. As long as it doesn’t rust, then it’s okay to use them.

However, if you are still unconvinced with my answers, then I would suggest that you opt for glass tea kettles. They contain no harmful chemical or metal; they don’t rust, chip off, or leach anything into your drink. Currently, borosilicate glass is the best choice.

One fun fact, borosilicate glass is used in laboratory environment because it does not contaminate its content in any way.

Are glass tea kettle better than stainless ones?

Now, this is a subjective matter. For many, they feel that glass kettles are undoubtedly superior to stainless steel ones and vice versa. However, it is safe to say that each type has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Stainless steel kettles are usually more sturdy and durable than glass ones. They don’t crack easily, they can withstand extreme heats better, and some of them can boil faster. However, they still have a risk, however low, of getting rusty.

Glass tea kettles, on the other hand, may look a lot more elegant than stainless ones to some people. They make controlling water level a lot easier, and you can spot the stains in the glass kettles much easier than stainless steel ones. And the best part of all? Glass doesn’t contain any metal and, as such, can’t leach harmful chemicals into your drink. Not to mention that it is physically impossible for glass to get rusty.

To conclude, I believe it is not the matter of which one is better, but which one is more suitable for you. And that, my friend, can only be decided by you yourself.

Is rust in steel kettle dangerous?

To make a long story short, yes. Trust me; you don’t want any rust in your kettle. It can become a health risk, as rust may contain harmful chemicals. It can also mean that the kettle might be leaching unwanted metal into your drink.

As mentioned above, stainless steel should be a safe material for kettles, but only when there’s no rust on them. If you find any rust in your kettles, proceed to either clean the rust from the products thoroughly or just get a new one.

Can tea kettle go in dish-washer?

Most tea kettles are not dish-washer safe. However, there are still certain exceptions – some tea kettles can safely go in dish-washers.

Typically, the kettles’ manufacturer will tell you if it’s dish-washer safe or not in the user guide. If you see no specification about this, then it’s safe to assume that it’s not safe to do so.

My Top Pick

After trying many tea kettles, my personal favorite definitely is Willow & Everett Stainless Steel Whistling Teapot. It has a short heating time thanks to it 5-layer encapsulation, it’s highly durable, especially against rust and oxidation, it’s toxic-free, and it’s everything you can ever ask for in a tea kettle.
