Air fryers are a relatively recent invention that has taken many home and restaurant kitchens by storm. They use less oil than traditional deep and skillet frying, producing tongue-tantalizing foods without a ton of added fat.
The best air fryers leave very little room for cooking error. Air-fried foods come out of the device as crispy and delicious as you’d like and without the headache of manual timing and flipping.
The most popular brand across the globe – the brand that first introduced air fryers back in late-2010 – is Philips. Their selection of air fryers is second to none and has remained on the top of any best air fryer list for the greater part of the past decade.
If you’re on the hunt for the best Philips air fryer, my friend, you’ve come to the right place. You’ll also get a chance to learn about the history of air fryers and what makes the Philip brand so popular.
A Glance at the Past: History of Philips Air Fryers
The air fryer has become a game-changer in the kitchen. This device offers a quick and easy solution to preparing healthy meals at home so you can skip buying processed foods from stores or fast food restaurants.
In late-2010, Philips Electric Company introduced the very the first commercial air fryer, a special blend of the traditional convection oven and deep fryer but without the mess or gallons of fat. How is this possible?
Philips air fryers apply the Maillard Effect principle and convection cooking to create a chemical reaction that cooks food to the perfect temperature in a short amount of time with little or no added fats.
Philips didn’t just produce one model and call it a day. They continued to innovate their creation, releasing numerous models into the market with a myriad of convenience-adding features.
How Does an Philips Air Fryer Work?
Initially, people were skeptical about air-frying foods. Frying without oil was unheard of, so Philips and other brands had to quickly introduce the concept of air-frying to their curious market.
First and foremost, air-frying is not technically frying. It does not involve submerging foods into a bath of hot oil to produce crunchy foods. Instead, the concept of air-frying draws more similarities from convection cooking.
An air fryer circulates hot air – typically up to 390°F – inside of a small chamber. The tiny cyclone of hot air makes contact with the entire surface and all nooks and crannies of the food to create a satisfying crunch.
You don’t need to add fats, but as a flavor delivery system, a little bit won’t hurt. After all, the food isn’t drowned in fat so it doesn’t absorb it needlessly during the cooking process.
Other Notable Air Fryer Brands
It didn’t take long for other manufacturers to follow in the footsteps of Philips.
GoWISE is known for their top-notch line of air fryer and air fryer toasters at a very reasonable price. Nuwave offers some popular large-size air fryers that large families or groups would enjoy using. And Ninja Foodi’s compact air fryers never fail to impress.
But if you’re looking for the Rolls Royce of air fryers, Philips is the brand to choose.

Philips Viva HD9621/99 Air Fryer
(Air-Fries to Perfection)
The HD9621/99’s 1.7-pound bucket is the smallest of any of Philip’s line of air fryers. With this in mind, you shouldn’t reasonably expect it to cook for a family of four or more.
However, that shouldn’t deter you from considering this model, even if you have a large family. This is by far the best Philips air fryer that actually fries to a perfect crisp. Other models do it well, but the HD9621/99 excels at it. Grilling and baking accessories are readily available online.

Philips Viva HD9220/86 Air Fryer
(Great for First-Time Buyers)
The simplistic design of this Viva model may be a put-off for some people, but for those who aren’t sure what to expect, the HD9220/86 is arguably the best Philips air fryer for first-time buyers.
Operating the HD9220/86 is a simple process involving turning a dial to set the temperature (fairly accurate). The timer is located right above the cooking controls, and in the back, you’ll find a nifty notch to store the power cord when not in use.
The recipe book that comes with this air fryer contains numerous recipes that first-time owners will definitely want to try.

Philips Viva HD9230/26 Air Fryer
Those of you who don’t want to babysit their air fryer while it’s working, the HD9230 is for you. Not only does it have a built-in timer that beeps when it’s ready, but it also has auto-shutoff to prevent your food from overcooking.
The handle remains cool to the touch while air-frying foods. However, for some odd reason, the cover’s latch doesn’t lock in place while the device is turned on. Your children should definitely avoid messing with this thing while it’s cooking.

Philips Premium XXL HD9630/96 Air Fryer
At first glance, the HD9630/96 looks like any other of Philips’ analog air fryers, and that’s because it shares many of the same specs as them. However, there are several shining features in this device that are worth mentioning.
First of all, this uses TurboStar technology to circular heated air throughout the cooking chamber, eliminating the need to preheat beforehand. When you’re hungry, toss a handful of fries in and set the timer. That’s all you need to do.
This is also one of Philips’ larger models with a 3-pound bucket that’s large enough to feed a family of four or more.

Philips Avance HD9240/34 Air Fryer
(Most Even Cooking)
Of all the models on this list, the HD9240/34 is one of the most impressive air fryers of all time, including those made by other brands. The reason is simple: it air-fries, grills, and bakes to perfection practically every… single… time.
Finding an air fryer like this is actually a lot harder than you’d think. Even if you’ve set the temperature and timer correctly, there’s always a tiny chance that your food will overcook. This is not the case with the HD9240/34.

Philips Viva HD9621/66 Air Fryer
The HD9621/66 is a manual model that requires some guesstimating to get the hang of. Don’t get me wrong; it’s an excellent air fryer, but there are several areas that could have been developed before release.
First things first, this air fryer works well at frying any meats or veggies. It comes with a tiny basket, but the smaller chamber actually quickens the cooking process. Plus, no preheating required to start this baby up.
The basket falls apart when you pull on the red tab. It’s supposed to do that – this allows for quick and easy cleaning after cooking.

Philips Avance HD9241/44 Air Fryer
The HD9241/44 is one of Philips’ classic models. It’s almost impossible to find, but if you’re into “antiques,” it’s worth giving this air fryer a go.
Surprisingly, it comes with Rapid Air technology that is supposed to eliminate the need for preheating. Even more surprising is that it doesn’t work as advertised. You’ll need to preheat the air fryer for at least three minutes before tossing food in.
Best of all, everything can be cooked inside of the chamber at once. Toss in any meats and veggies you’re prepared and you’ll have a full meal ready.

Philips Premium HD9741/99 Air Fryer
(High-End Air Fryer)
The final item on my list of the best Philips air fryers is none other than the HD9741/99 – the air fryer with the highest price but promises perfection with every time.
Considering this is the most high-end air fryer, its price tag is actually quite reasonable. Its specs are actually similar to those of many of the models mentioned earlier, but its major selling point is the amount of fat it cuts.
According to the Philips, the HD9741/99 can reduce the amount of fat left in food by up to 90%.

Comprehensive Philips Air Fryer Buying Guide
Despite being available for almost an entire decade and their growing popularity, air fryers are still a relatively unknown piece of kitchen equipment. In this guide, I’ll go over everything you need to know about air fryers and the criteria used to rate the Philips air fryers available.
Benefits of an Air Fryer
Like most kitchen appliances, air fryers were made to add convenience to the way we cook our food.
Air fryers eliminate the need to dedicate one or more stove burners for frying foods. This will allow you to do more in the kitchen with less effort.
However, the biggest selling point of an air fryer is producing healthier food. Air fryers don’t need oil to fry – instead, they circular hot air inside of a tiny chamber that cooks food to crispy perfection (if done correctly).
Things to Consider
Bucket Size
The size of the bucket determines how much food can cook in the air fryer at a time. The larger bucket air fryers are ideal for large families, but they do require more time to cook meats thoroughly.
Digital vs. Manual
Digital systems are ideal since they let you know using LEDs how hot the chamber is and how much time remains before the device shuts down automatically. Manual models are fine if you’re on a budget (the HD9741/99 excluded, of course) and have an external thermostat.
User-Friendliness
This refers to how easy it is to operate the air fryer. In general, all air fryers are user-friendly since they don’t require pushing a ton of buttons to operate, but some have indicators letting you know what’s what.
Temperature Accuracy
Similar to electric ovens, the temperature gauge in air fryers isn’t always accurate to a tee, and you can’t just readjust the thermometer whenever you like. Some models come with faulty temperature gauges. That’s the sad, unavoidable fact.
Fat Removal Technology
Using multiple built-in sensors and fans, the Philips air fryer creates a miniature localized “tornado” to send heated air around the piece of food, burning off more fat which is then collected in a drip tray for easy disposal.
Rapid Air Technology
This is a system of transferring heat inside of the air fryer cooking chamber. It circulates heat in such a way that the entire surface of the food you’re cooking is exposed to the heated air, giving it a crispy outside while retaining juices inside.
TurboStar Technology
A series of fans placed in a starfish pattern blow air around the food to produce even crispiness. With TurboStar, you hardly need any oil to get your foods to the desired crunch level.
FAQs
For the remainder of this post, I’d like to spend a few moments answering some of the most FAQs regarding air fryers.
Conclusion
And that concludes this post, ladies and gentlemen. I hoped you learned something about the magnificence of air-frying foods and have made the decision to live a healthier life by reducing or cutting fatty oils from your diet.
If so, I wholeheartedly recommend you take a look at the Philips Premium XXL HD9650/96. This beast of an air fryer will have you wondering why you never thought of getting an air fryer before. If this isn’t for you, you can take a look at the 15 items on my list of the best Philips air fryer.
Hi! Please review the new 9723.
I really want all the benefit of XXL type (digital, far remover, quick clean, etc) but with the smaller size (not too big/bulky).
Thanks.
Hi Priska,
The Philips HD9723/11 Airfryer uses Fat Removal Technology with Rapid Air technology to provide you the food with maximum taste but minimum fat. Thanks to instant heat and Rapid Airflow technology, you can cook 1.5 faster than in an oven.
This latest version is 20% more compact than other products, but it still has the same capacity (0.8 kg basket). Cleaning is less stressful with all removable parts. The exterior surface is cool and safe to touch.
This model also has some common features such as temperature control, time control, ready and power signal, auto shutoff, and nonslip feet.
Although Philips HD9723/11 Airfryer lacks Keep warm button and it can’t save your cooking settings, this air fryer is still worth considering because it helps you create a healthy and delicious meal quickly. Moreover, this model is space-saving, which can meet your demand.
Loves,
Amanda
Wow, thank you for your fast respond & it’s a very useful information.
Really love your reviews.
Again, thanks Amanda!

Priska

What is the difference between essential collection HD9260 and avance HD9240?
Dear Nancy,
Phillips HD9260/91 Airfryer can cook up to 90% less fat while the fat reduction level of Phillips HD9240 Airfryer is only 75%. However, Phillips HD9240 Airfryer has a more extended time range of 60 minutes (Phillips HD9260/91 Airfryer has a 30-minute timer)
About the size, the HD9620 can serve up to 5 people, while the HD9240 can only serve about 4 people. These two models are suitable for feeding the whole family.
About performance, the HD9240 features patented Starfish technology so that your food is cooked more evenly without the need to turn the food. That’s why the advanced HD9240 gives a more significant result, and it is favored by many users.
With HD9240 airfryer, you can have a higher chance of enjoying perfectly golden-brown and crispy fried food. Although Phillips HD9240 Airfryer has a smaller capacity compared to the Phillips HD9260/91 Airfryer, the performance of the advancedHD9240 model is worth considering.
Loves,
Amanda
Hi Amanda, I am confused between philips 9240 and 9260. I was using 9240 before now I am to buy again can you please highlight differences between both and which one to go for.
Also is there timer difference between both models and if yes does that make a difference?
Hi Sadie,
Thank you for your comment!
There are just minor differences between the two models. Although the Phillips HD9260 is the newer version, the Phillips HD9240 that you used has more power to enhance performance for even faster results. Moreover, Phillips HD9240 has a 60-minute timer while the Phillips HD9260 has an only 30-minute timer.
It is advisable to choose the air fryer with the timer that can be set longer than 30 minutes so that you can conveniently schedule the cooking cycle for cooking more dishes. In my view, you can continue using the Phillips HD9240 because of its excellent performance and extended timer.
Have a wonderful day and stay safe.
Love, Amanda.
Hi , please suggest difference between 9240 and 9260 which model is better and rapid air and turbo air which is better.
Also 30 minute and 60 minute timer what difference does it make? Price for both models is same approx kindly guide me which is better among both.
Hi Anne,
Thanks for your comment!
First of all, the difference between the Turbo Star technology and Rapid Air technology is the air circulation method. Both of the two technologies contribute to even frying and fantastic cooking results. Phillips HD9260 has a 30-minute timer, and Phillips HD9240 has an extended timer with 60 minutes. And the longer timer will give you more convenience to carry out different recipes, so I think you should go for the Phillips HD9240.
Have a wonderful day and stay safe.
Love, Amanda.
Hi, thank you. Which is the difference between Airfryer HD9621_94 and HD9216_84.
Thanks
Dear Cristian.
Thank you for your comment!
These two products use different air circulation method. Phillips HD9621/94 air fryer uses the unique Turbo Star technology while the Phillips HD9216/84 air fryer uses the Rapid Air technology. However, I think the difference in air circulation method doesn’t seem to affect the performance of these two products.
They all contribute to healthier frying, and they can both flawlessly create the fried food that is tender on the inside and crispy on the outside. With Phillips HD9621/94 air fryer, you don’t need to preheat. Therefore, you can cook food quicker and save more time compared to the Phillips HD9216/84 air fryer.
Additionally, the two air fryers have the same capacity, but the HD9621/94 is lighter than the HD9216/84.
Phillips HD9621/94 air fryer is much more effortless to lift from one place to another place in your kitchen.
Loves,
Amanda

Hi,
May I know what is the difference between HD9220 and the HD9218 in terms of functionality and tech spec?
Dear Kenny Chew,
The only difference technical specification between the Philips HD9220 air fryer and Philips HD9218 air fryer is the voltage. The voltage of HD9220 is 120V while the voltage of HD9218 is 230V. There is little variation in their function and performance. One significant bonus point of the HD9220 is that you can receive Recipe book & App.

Hi, I am still confused about the difference of turbo star technology and rapid air technology. Though you mentioned in one of the replies that the performance is not much different but why these two different technologies.
Hi Manu,
Thank you for your comment!
You are not the only one to be confused about the TurboStar technology and Rapid Air technology. Even the brand itself also has some trouble coming up with a definite answer. The main difference between the two technologies is the air circulation method.
With the TurboStar technology, the bottom of the Phillip air fryer’s basket has a pinwheel-shaped starfish design to swirl hot air around each piece of food. About Rapid Air technology, it is the name that Phillips gave to the RUSH technology.
A distinctive feature of the technology is that heat is transmitted at a very high intensity and spread from all sides over the food. As I said, both of the two technologies contribute to the fantastic cooking result. I hope this helps, but please let me know if you need anything else!

Hi,
I want the hd 9723 specifications with bigget capacity. Is there bigger capacity available ? And what type ?
Dear Dwi,
Thank you for your comment!
Both the Philips HD9723/11 Airfryer and the Philips HD9723/10 Airfryer have a capacity of 0.8kg (about 1.76 lbs), which can serve about 4 portions. If you need a Phillips air fryer with larger capacity, you can consider the Philips Premium XXL HD9650/96 Air Fryer.
I hope this helps, but please let me know if you need anything else!
Stay safe and have a great day!

Hi,

Phillips Premium XXL Digital HD9861/99 air fryer is the newest version of Phillips air fryers. Compared with the earlier versions (HD 9650/93 or HD9630/21), the HD9861/99 features the new Smart Sensing technology that automatically adjusts time and temperature for perfect results. Another plus point of the new version is the Smart Chef programs designed by professional chefs that let you cook your favorite food with just one touch. I hope this information can help!

What is the difference between “Philips Viva Collection HD9721/13”, “Philips Daily Collection HD9218”, and “Philips Viva Collection HD9220”? Which one is better “turbo star technology” OR “rapid air technology”?
Dear Somesh,
The first difference between the three products is the technology. Philips Viva Collection HD9721/13 uses Twin TurboStar technology while others use Rapid Air technology. The HD9721/13 model seems to have more features, and it comes with the Power-on light while the other two products don’t.
You will receive Over 200 recipes in the app and a free recipe book if you choose the HD9721/13 model while the Philips Viva Collection HD9220 comes with the recipe booklet with more than 25 delicious recipes. The Philips Daily Collection HD9218 does not include a recipe.
The main difference between the two technologies is the air circulation method, and it does not affect the cooking result. With the TurboStar technology, the pinwheel-shaped starfish design swirls hot air around each piece of food. With Rapid Air technology, heat is transmitted at a very high intensity and spreads from all sides over the food.
Stay safe and have a great day!

Hi.. does HD 9216/43 air fryer comes with rapid air , what is the difference between 9216/43 and HD9218/53. which one is best and what is the basket size for both.
Dear Rajesh,
Thank you for your comment!
The Philips HD9216/43 Air Fryer and Philips HD9218/53 Air Fryer have the same basket size of 28 ounces. Both of them use rapid air technology to ensure healthy and even frying results. One single difference between the two models is that the HD9218/53 works quieter so that it can be a better option.
Have a nice day and stay safe,

Hi Amanda, I have this model HD9220/40 which is really out of date, so I’m hoping to upgrade. Can you please provide some recommendations? I would like a model that can accommodate up to a family of at least 4. I also want one that makes the least noise as the model I currently have is very loud. A timer is also essential, it doesn’t need to have too much functions as it is normally just used for heating up frozen fried food. Thanks Amy
Dear Amy,
I think the Philips XXL HD9650/96 Air Fryer can totally meet your demand since it comes with family size, fat removal technology, and premium quality. With a 3-pound capacity, this product is ready to make delicious meals for up to 6 people.
This air fryer does not require preheating, so you can start cooking or heating your frozen food within seconds. Not only does it deliver quiet operation, but it also comes with user-friendly features such as a digital interface, 5 one-touch programs, dishwasher-safe removable parts, a quick-clean basket, and so on.

great review, thanks 🙂
I found HD9650/90 in philips website but also HD9650/91 and there are many others codes like HD9650/99 … is there any difference of quality (/90, /91, /99…)?
Dear George,
Thank you for your comment!
There is no difference in quality between the Phillips HD9650 air fryers with diverse codes. I think that each model comes with different codes because it is sold in a specific country. For example, Phillips HD9650/91 is sold in UAE and Thailand, while HD9650/99 is sold in the UK.
I hope this information can help!

Hi,
Would you recommend the HD9240/92 or HD9260?
In your comment above you start to compare the two but then mention the HD9640 which has confused me as to which of the original two is better?
Thanks so much
Hello Kim,
Thank you a lot for your comment,
As you can see in my previous comments, the Phillips HD9240 is a better choice since it comes with a longer timer of 60 minutes, while the Phillips HD9260 only comes with a 30-minute timer.
Have a nice day and stay safe,
Amanda
